Tonight Brainfeeder’s Thundercat performs a rare live show in London for Tiger Beer’s Hidden Depths series in conjunction with Ninja Tune, alongside Floating Points, Big Dada’s Offshore and Slugabed himself.

Hidden Depths of Ninja Tune will be hosted at Fabric tonight, Tiger Beer will be streaming Slugabed’s set live from the venue from 21:15 – 22:30 (GMT). The stream will be hosted by Fact Mag on their homepage.

This is a great opportunity for Ninja Tune fans to watch and listen to one of the label’s latest signing who is due to launch his debut album ‘Time Team’ this month.

To get us a little excited, Slugabed drops this celebratory mix from the Ninja, Brainfeeder and Big Dada vaults – delving into the back catalog of the label whilst peppering the mix with some of his own productions from his forthcoming ‘Time Team’ album, due on the Ninja label imminently.

The mix is packed with a wide array of experimental yet soulful goodness, covering sounds from LA to Glasglow and a few stop overs into no mans land, as the likes of Daedelus and Hot Sugar takes us through sonic be-wilderness.

Vancouver’s latest weekly dance affair takes us down memory lane through a mix of Throwback Rap and Hip Hop while creating a sweet bag of new recollections for years to come! Join us Yetis at Throwback Thursdays at Vinyl Retro Lounge!

‘Throwback’ is a term we usually use when referring to the good ol’ times. Whether it’s jamming to a dated Beach Boys record or coming across an old flick on facebook, ecstatic memories are bound to stick a cheeky girin on your face. In paradox, Vancouver’s latest weekly dance affair takes us down memory lane through a mix of Throwback Rap and Hip Hop while creating a sweet bag of new recollections for years to come!

Situated between Gastown and Tinseltown’s Vinyl Retro Lounge, Throwback Thursday features the city’s most diverse disc jockeys on rotation. Although Hip Hop, R&B, and Club Jams are the basis, expect the unexpected as the selectors themselves come from backgrounds of dubstep, future bass, Nintendo-funk, soap-opera-intros, sex wiggles and every sub genre created since Mozart first played the guitar with his violin! Without further ado, the Yeti takes a look at this month’s headliners.

The launch party last week saw Warp Record’s Canadian export Babe Rainbow punch out a banging set alongside local heads Rhek, Cherchez and Relly Rells. Tonight (May 10th) headlines a staple in Van City’s hip hop scene and all round joker– Flip Out! Being one half of Canada’s rawest soundsystem Los Hermanos Libres and Red Bull Thre3style champ only means chaos behind the decks and riots on the dancefloor! On May 17th Hot Sex and High Finance’s Matt/Dylan would be gracing the 1s and 2s with their signature electro influenced rap and a sack of retro rhythms inspired by dead rappers, Darkwing Duck and glowsticks! Check out their album XXX & $$$ below.

Expect ‘East Van twerk warehouse music’ on May 24th as the Prison Garde unlocks our incarcerated minds with his bass driven sounds. The Halifax native also channels his diverse musical personas through the alias of Sixtoo, Megasoid, Speaker bruiser Rob and is currently one third of Nouveau Palais alongside Ango and Lunice from the LuckyMe imprint. Take a peek on their jam sess below.

The month finishes off with a unqiue DJ holding down Toronto’s Dubslingers collective. You might catch him sharing the stage with Mixmaster Mike and Dillinja or dropping dancefloor gems from Nelson, B.C to Granada, Spain but on May 31st, Dubconscious will be nurturing our ear drums at Vinyl Retro Lounge, wrapping up a wicked first month of Throwback Thursdays. All this plus residents from local collectives; Rad Times, VVO, Sharks & Hammers and more!

With that said and done, come rumble with us Yetis to some throwback tunes and raise your hands in the air to ‘Pass The Couvoursier’. While it’s up there, signal the bartender for a refill because its $4 Kokanee and shot specials all night long. Good music for good people, these will be times to look back on if we still remember them!

We furry creatures are also trading hugs for guestlist spots, so feel free to shoot us a message or keep up to date with Throwback Thursdays HERE.

For Odd Future fans with a little more balls, who haven’t found a soundtrack to play GTA to after a long day of verbal rimming by your high school deputies, Yeti highly recommends Death Grips.

Sacramento horror-core rap group Death Grips make a recipe of sounds that consist of DIY hardcore and shock rap about nuclear prison wars. Edgy guitar riffs accompanied by punch drunk slogans, the group was born out of the intense concrete capital state of California, where drugs, violence, prostitution and mental illness are a few common occurrences the group comes across. It is then less surprising that the content of their music shatters any sort of sonic stability, as MC Ride aka Stefan Burnett yells with rage through unbearable levels of hysteria, while Andy Mornin leads with distorted keys and Zach Hill takes listeners through a bizarre ride of incoherent drum patterns.

Last year, drummer and vocalist Hill was squatting in a basement with no bathroom while working on the three recordings (including the rawest mixtape you’ll ever hear- ‘Exmilitary’) the group have made so far. In a interview he did with The Stool Pigeon, Hill reflects how mad the experience was and how it gave inspirations to create lyrics witnessed in ‘Bitch Please’, “When Shit goes down I’ll be there with my hand on a gun/ And my eyes on the road”. Uncooked as fuck, I have a feeling these lot aren’t using any analogies in their rap.

For Odd Future fans with a little more balls, who haven’t found a soundtrack to play GTA to after a long day of verbal rimming by your high school deputies, Yeti highly recommends Death Grips latest studio album ‘The Money Store’, released on Epic Records.

Above is a clip taken from a live performance Death Grips did at Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Texas, performing ‘Guillotine’. While my favorite tune from the group has to be the opening track to ‘Exmilitary’. Titled ‘Beware’, the track samples Charles Manson followed by the lyrics ‘I am the beast I worship’. Must say, I haven’t recited an intro so thoroughly since Jay-Z’s ‘Threats’ back in ‘08. I RULE THE KNICKLES GUY.

Britain’s favorite mix dons have been summoned by Carling to record exclusive tracks to capture the sounds of summer for Carling Zest- the limited edition larger with a hint of natural citrus. Yus!

Britain’s favorite mix dons have been summoned by Carling to record exclusive tracks to capture the sounds of summer for Carling Zest- the limited edition larger with a hint of natural citrus. Yus, perfect juice to quench yeti’s thirst in the sun!

The concept tracks form part of the new Carling Zest ‘Summer Bottled’ ad campaign which aims to capture what makes for a Great British summer. The artists known for their tasteful skills in beat matching, selecting and sampling went out with Dictaphone recorders to capture a number of sounds that evoke summer. With 32 sounds and matching video clips to work with, the DJs provided their own signature summer soundtracks. From May 23rd music fans will get the chance to do the same with the Carling Zest app at youtube.com/carlingzest.

The three DJ’s tunes vary in style ranging from Yoda’s mix of latin house jams, Jaguar Skills breakbeat hip-hop to 70’s psychedelic trip-hop vibes of DJ Food, but somehow they all remain quintessentially British in nature, with strong connotations of UK sub-cultural roots in music.

DJ Yoda, who was instrumental in creating the ‘bootleg’ cut-up mixing style, said of his track ‘Somero Moombah’: “I wanted it to have a massive-party-in-a-field vibe, like the best moment at a summer festival. The sound was influenced by Moombahton – a style of dance music which just makes me think of sunshine. That’s why vuvuzela was such an important sound for the track; that noise says BIG party.”

Yeti’s favorite mix has got to be DJ Food’s production consisting of deep drum beats made with tennis rackets, samples from sounds of bees and seagulls playing structure to a set of psychedelic guitar riffs. The visual take is equally captivating, consisting of a range of summer related clips and edits.

Commenting on his track ‘Summer SFX Riddim’ Jaguar Skills said: “It’s like lots of mini tracks blended together – like a DJ set condensed into one track. The super important sound was the snare which I made out of the hiss of a beer bottle opening. Ironically, I can hear rain in the track – but it’s that mad British summer rain that’s really fun.”

It’s that time of the year again where us Yeti’s begin to wonder where to migrate in summer. The festival season is upon us and we have the difficult task of deciding which party tickles our bellies.

Luckily enough our friends down in Brighton have decided to create their own festival, and what better picture to paint than sun, sea, sand and unbridled passion for music?

‘Echo festival’, boasts a stunning location in the picturesque location of Makarska, Croatia, hosting an exclusive private beach. The intimate location is well equipped with numerous bars and good music.

We’re amazed at the line up they’ve managed to pull in the time available. Not only have they just confirmed the addition of Sully, Pedestrian, Klic and Medlar but with headliners Pariah, Midland and a live set from Scotsman Koreless the main stage is sure to go off. Well rounded records will be representing with boss man Donga and head honchos Deadboy and Hackman. They haven’t forgotten you DnB heads either as you can expect sets from the likes of Spectrasoul, Lenzman and S.P.Y. among others.

If for whatever mundane reason you get bored of these fantastic electronic acts there will be a variety of music ranging from hiphop and funk to reggae and ska presented gloriously on the beach by the numerous promoters who are attending; We’ll be there spinning them Yeti bangers!

For all you Yeti ‘s out there make sure you attend because we’ll be representing in full force with our own four hour slot. We’ll also be accompanied by a whole bunch of other promoters and crews including the ENK fam, Kung fu, Dagger, Simply vinyl among others. The idea is to create a diverse melting pot of music in one of the prettiest locations in Europe. We think they might have nailed it!

Tickets are priced at very reasonable £45 and available from Eufest.com

COMPETITION

We at Yeti HQ are giving all you DJs out there the chance to win yourself a free festival ticket and possibly your own beach front slot! All you have to do is send us in a mix showcasing your sound and we pick out our favourite.

The series launches at Fabric on Wednesday 16th May with a spectacular takeover of Room 1 by Ninja Tun showcasing the very best in new talent. Sister labels Big Dada Records (Wiley, Roots Manuva) and Brainfeeder (Flying Lotus, The Gaslamp Killer) will also be represented to provide the audience with a night that delves into the depths of the Ninja Tune label.

A rare performance from Brainfeeder’s Thundercat has got us very excited as it will only be the second time he has played in the UK and his first headline show on these shores. Thundercat will be backed by the astonishing talents of Ninja affiliated artist Floating Points and new signing Slugabed, with Offshore representing Big Dada.

Trinidad's Jillionare has been behind the decks for 15 years and is currently conquering all four corners of the globe with Major Lazer and the Mad Decent mafia. We caught an interview with him on the concept behind his parties, new cats on his label and his forthcoming line of socks!

Have you ever been to Burger King and found an onion ring in your French fry container? Even though you knew you were getting the fries, you were pleasantly surprised to find an onion ring, which was an unexpected but equally satisfying treat. Well, you can compare that scenario to walking into one of Jillionaire’s parties. You expect he’ll be banging out a flavor packed DJ set ranging from reggae to his soca roots but suddenly he’ll slap you off guard with a hypnotizing drop of moombahton or an unheard Vybz Kartel remix, getting the whole dance floor more ecstatic than a fatty with a double-super-size Burger King order!

Hailing from the twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago, Chris Leacock aka The Jillionaire has been behind the decks for 15 years now, first starting off on a Trini Sound System with two belt drive turntables and a broken mixer. These days, he’s breaking away from the norm focus of soca and dancehall in the Caribbean community and blending these influences with electronica to form his own hybrid sound!

It’s no coincidence that Jillionaire’s style would eventually cross paths with Diplo’s Mad Decent label. Home to genre defying artists that have fused traditional sounds like Brazillian baile funk, Angolan kudro with current dance genres like Dutch house and dubstep, Jillionaire’s diverse flavor fitted perfectly. The link came when Switch and M.I.A visited Trinidad to record the Grammy nominated ‘Kala’ album and connected with Jillionaire through a mutual pal. Through common production styles and musical approach, he joined forces with the prevailing Major Lazer project and has been conquering the world ever since, all in the name of a Jamaican commando that fights vampires and parties hard!

In between starring in a National Geographic documentary and kick starting his own imprint – Feel Up Records, the afro warrior’s had the chance to curate the first ever Tropical Bass party ‘Chicken N Beer’ at Miami Music Week / WMC. Now running for the third year, it’s featured the likes of Toddla T, Black Chiney, French Fries (goes well with Chicken & Beer) and many more under the scotching Floridian sun! The self proclaimed Jilly-Juice also humorously corresponds for a number of online platforms including the Mad Decent Blog and Okayplayer’s Large Up. Prior to his European tour with Major Lazer this month (peep the video above), the Yeti got in touch with him in Vancouver for a few words on the concept behind his parties, new cats on his label and his forthcoming line of socks!

In three words, who is The Jillionaire?

Man. Of. Distinction.

What tunes influenced you growing up in Trinidad and Tobago?

My jams had to be, ‘Prince – When Doves Cry’, ‘Culture Club – Clock of the Heart’ and ‘Olivia Newton John – Get Physical’!

How did your affiliation with Mad Decent /Major Lazer come about?

I’ve been fucking with Diplo ever since he sent me into the forest to record this crazy rastaman! Never made the album though, somehow, I’m still here!

We first caught you at Notting Hill Carnival a few years back, how did that compare to the carnivals back on the twin islands?

Well, all the carnivals you go to in the world are inspired by the Trini Carnivals. Notting Hill is extra awesome because there’s the parade route, but then there are around 250 sound systems set up all over the grove. Quite a musical journey if you will!

Your live sets vary from reggae, UK funky to tropical bass, what track makes the crowd go off no matter where you are in the world?

‘Avicii – Levels’ always get the crowds going but personally I’m really feeling ‘Diplo feat Nicky Da B – Express yourself’ and anything dancehall always knocks like ‘Beenie Man ft Fambo – I’m Okay/Drinking Rum & Redbull’

That Beenie Man track definitely went off on your Boiler Room mix! Speaking of which, we all know Mad Decent puts on a wild party, what’s the most memorable gig you’ve had with the label so far?

Every night with Major Lazer is live but probably the first ‘Chicken N Beer’ party I did down in Miami with tons of friends. We couldn’t bill Major Lazer because they were playing Ultra so we made up general rubbish and even had peeps beefing with Major Lazer on Twitter! On the night of the party I couldn’t get Wes (Diplo) on the phone but literally at the last minute he came through and shit got memorable. Jah Dan and Jovi Rockwell performed live during the set and Black Chiney opened up. What else you gonna ask for?!

Apart from the essentials to a Caribbean cook out, where did you get the concept for ‘Chicken N Beer’?

In Trini, we do a whole lot of ‘liming’ and not much else. It’s essentially our time for ‘hanging out’ but a little more involved. Like you would have a lime at your house and cook a pot of food and friends would come over and bring drinks and whatever. Even if there was music, it’s not really a full on party, just your close friends hanging out and spending time. I wanted to have a party that communicated this vibe. We’re in our third year now and I wanna start taking it to other cities as well!

How has moving away from Port of Spain to Los Angeles shaped you as an artist?

‘Move’ is a relative term in that I’ll always identify as being from Trini. Wherever I keep most of my stuff or pay rent is irrelevant. You kinda just have to be in America a lot because Trinidad exists in its own kind of isolation. That’s changing now and the music (scene) is evolving, but for the most part my most important influence is that I can share the music and connections that I make on my travels with the kids back home that are making amazing stuff.

Any favorite artists that you’ve been playing lately and anyone in particular we should keep an ear out for?

The shit that I’ve been running these days is all over the map! I’m starting a label so Imma take this opportunity to put my homies on blast! Look out for Richie Beretta, Micro Prophet, Icy Lytes and a bunch of other shit that you ain’t never heard of but I think is really good!

What can we expect from The Jillionaire in the coming future?

Probably my own line of socks, pajamas or someshit, Im out here working on it…

When you’re not behind the decks or hopping on and off planes, what do you do to relax?

I’ll relax when nobody cares anymore!

And there you have it! We’ll finish off with some sunshine for your ears (listen above) on Jillionaire’s Culture Bash Mixtape Vol.1 with a jillion bashing jams of soca, uk funky and bhangra!

Yeti Out X
