YETI OUT | KEYS N KRATES X KNOW?SHOW
Today, our digital revolution has unleashed creativity and talent in an unpredictable way with unlimited opportunities. But with a bootleg copy of Abelton, $500 CDJs and a hungry mind capacity for all the gigabytes our internet can flood one’s eardrums and hard drive, overnight DJs can now electrify crowds with their music comprehension what once took years of crate digging to build. As a result, everyone is now a DJ or ‘artist’, your neighbor, the pizza delivery guy and even your kid sister whose room is plastered with infuriating David Guetta posters. This digital age has shown us raw performances but also swamped us with junk. Now and again you’ll come across a boring club show DJ who may only fist pump to their repetitive Top 40 set if they can conveniently signal the bartender for a drink. Shame.
Conversely, Toronto’s Keys N Krates chews up all these cloned lackluster routine artists, and spits them in your face while showing you how it’s really done! Combining influences from soul, electronic, hip-hop and turntablism, Keys N Krates have been pioneering live remixing as a performing art and are mind blowing at it. Their live shows consist of deconstructing a track while reassembling it in real time. They would be remixing Lionel Richie’s All Nigh Long while throwing in J Dilla samples then ingeniously slapping UK Funky all over a Feist tune, assembling a flawless sound.
The trio include; Adam Tune on drums, synth-master David Matisse on keys, and award-winning Jr. Flo on turntables. They perform as a cohesive unit relying on the turntables and mix equipment as much as the keyboard and drums, all while feeding off each other and interpreting live tracks. By sampling legendary artists like Erykah Badu and The Beatles yet performing it in a fresh style of technical instrumentation, Keys N Krates reflects how contemporary they are to today’s music scene and digital revolution.
Constantly searching for a fusion approach of old and new, they once secreted themselves in a Northern Ontario farmhouse enclosed with 70′s analog recording equipment and jammed out a mixtape straight onto vinyl tape. The result is the Live Re-Mixing 101 project. It takes us through a history of hip hop and dance music from Tribe Called Quest favorites to Simian Mobile Disco bangers as they rip it all apart and reconstruct an innovative piece of composition; check it out below.
