YETI OUT: KUTMAH

Earnest Endeavours are back with another stimulating night for your senses. You would think it would be hard to top the hugely successful debut of Nosaj Thing’s AV show but topped it they have! This time round the EE team have hooked up with the legendary screen printing crew and label Hit+Run & the infamous artist / DJ / producer Justin McNulty aka Kutmah. This spectacular event has been divided up into two parts. Part 1 sees us delving into Kutmah’s Solo Art Exhibition, and Part 2 is the after party – celebrating Kutmah’s ‘The New Error Mix CD‘ and Jams ‘A Heart Breaking Work of Swagger & G Ness‘ Mixtape.

Justin “Kutmah” McNulty is a respected DJ/ Producer / artist but he is also a man of poor circumstance. Born in the UK to an Egyptian mother and Scottish father he moved to the US aged 12. Kutmah established himself in the downtempo hip hop scene of LA, think Flying Lotus, Low End Theory and The Gas Lamp Killer. But on the 5th of May 2010 without any advance warnings or prior criminal activities, armed federal agents entered his house and detained him. With no calls allowed to loved ones or even a lawyer, he was then interrogated over immigration issues and flown to a New Mexico prison where he was placed on lock down until his release 2 months later.
This was no fly by Lindsay Lohan lodging, this was one hour of daylight per day, lights on at 4am, basic gruel for dinner and keeping your soap on a well secured rope. With all creative outputs cut off, Kutmah put the only tools he had to use. Armed with nothing more than a short pencil and the straight edge of his ID car, Kutmah began drawing. All the frustrations (lack of females springs to mind), emotions and confinement resulted in the accumulation of 39 integrate drawings which have now been placed in a collection named, “Two Soups & A Honeybun”. The detail of these sketches not only conveys the length of time spent in solitude but also simple workings of the human mind when placed in such unnatural conditions. The full collection of his work will be presented by VTech in Protein brand new project space, ‘18 hewett street‘ on Wednesday 19th of January. More Details HERE.
Kutmah will then be spinning at the EE after party where the Hit and Run Crew will be producing some off screen prints of Kutmah’s sketches.
