INTRODUCING | BAITFACE
Our introduction series has really started to grab a great following, and why wouldn’t it, we pride ourselves on the fact that you’ll hear some of the hottest up and coming producers here first! This time round we have a real anthem producing powerhouse in the making going by the name of Baitface!
Yeti first discovered the humming vibrations of his bass from a Twitter release of his track We Are, the track promptly featured on Scratcha DVA’s ‘Grimey Breakfast’ show on Rinse FM soon after. Baitface has a great understanding of the power of space within dubstep. A signature characteristic that was once at very heart of the genre, which over recent years, has been filled with aggressive synths and non stop bass. His style echo’s influences of Skream’s minimal touch and Breakage’s solid sub bass but with the addition of euphoric spacing that the later producer often lack. But don’t take my word for it, his impressive work on his track entitled Tommorow speaks for itself!
We took a moment out of his busy schedule to have a quick chat with the man behind the beats:
Baitface, where does the name come from?
The name comes from various meanings; always being known as the ‘Bait’ kid growing up, I always used to get caught when I done something wrong, I was always too obvious, also because my face is simply just bait, people come up to me quite often saying ‘do I know you’ when they clearly don’t, one of those faces. I also know way too many people, which is a good thing but can get you into trouble sometimes!
So what kind of trouble did you get caught up then, dare I ask?
Oh nothing major, I just meant in general, silly things when you’re growing up and that.
How long you been producing for, what gives you drive and determination?
I started dabbling in production at 14, started taking it serious at about 16/17, and I’m 18 now so I’ve been producing properly for nearly two years I guess, just experimenting, creating my own sound, Dubstep’s a perfect outlet for me as its a mixture of loads of different genres and there’s no rules, as long as there’s sub bass, anything else goes!
The drive and determination comes from this uncontrollable obsession with music I’ve had from a young age, I discovered pirate radio when I was young, and while the other kids on my estate were out playing football and scratching cars, I was indoors listening to all sorts of underground dance music, House, Garage, Jungle, Drum & Bass, and very early Dubstep, on stations like Freek, De-Ja, Rinse etc.
Any Interests and influences that have really shaped your sound
Mostly the whole music scene in London, its always been so fresh, I grew up on a council estate before moving to Kent with my parents in my teens, but I promised myself I wouldn’t let that London side of me slip, by regularly visiting the capital, and keeping on top of the music coming out of it. Which is another reason I decided to write music and DJ because I wanted to keep that part of me alive, even though I was living and still live about a 40 minute drive south east of where I was born and grew up, in Greenwich.
So whats the music or even dubstep scene like in Kent?
Where I am (Just outside Sittingbourne) it’s a bit dead for anything underground, I go out locally and all you hear is commercial music, which I don’t mind, I love all music and will give anything a chance, but most of the people you see out don’t really have a clue.
There is a small network of guys in Sheerness doing there thing and they’ve put on a few nights, I think there’s more of a scene for it in places like Medway and Maidstone though where there’s more heads that appreciate underground sounds. There are some really good nights put on by the ‘Dubbed Out’ guys in the Maidstone area and there’s a place called ‘Tap N Tin’ in Chatham (Medway) that’s usually a venue for live bands but I hear they have a Dubstep night every Monday now so that can’t be a bad thing…
Your sound is pretty diverse, how do you see it developing further, and have you found your style?
Thanks! That’s what I’m aiming for, just to be as diverse as possible, showing everyone what I can do. I’m always trying to switch up my style to keep people on their toes. Some people have said they would like me to write more ‘filth’ and some have said they love me for my deeper, minimal stuff. I just do me, I don’t see it as one or the other, I just make what I feel and the rest is history.
Thats a good way of thinking, music should be personal. Theres a lot of eager bedroom producers out there, you mind giving them an insight in how you create and what your setup is?
People are often surprised by the simplicity behind my set-up, but I always say, it isn’t what you’re using, it’s how you’re using it, if the ideas aren’t there you won’t write anything decent, simple as. I also believe that limitation boosts creativity, and limited, my set-up definitely is.
My current set up consists of a very basic HP PC, which is about 7/8 years old now, with an old 1.6ghz Intel processor and 1 GB of RAM, running FL Studio 9 and a shit load of VST’s (Which can be a strain, seen as though the PC isn’t even dual core hahaha), I also have a huge sample library, which I’m constantly adding to, I can’t stress enough how important it is to have your own collection of sounds that you’ve built from the ground up, that you know inside out, well for me anyway…
I don’t use any hardware but I am looking at investing in a nice analogue synth at some stage, Other than the PC it’s just a pair of Sony Hifi Speakers and a sub (I don’t have monitors, but I know the Sony’s very well in terms of how they translate to most other systems) and an M-Audio Oxygen 49 Midi Keyboard/Controller, which sometimes I don’t even use, I have a habit of just drawing Midi notes in the Piano Roll with the mouse, haha!
You a Sub-er Wub-er?
Either really, it changes all the time for me. I love all of it. From brock out mid rangers, to anthemic main roomers and minimal dubbed out rollers!
Favourite track and album so far this year?
It’s a joint first place between Skream and Breakage for me, both works were equally amazing. The debut Magnetic Man album is also an excellent piece, it’s commercial but it carries it the right way. My favourite track would be too hard to say, there is so many I’ve absolutely loved this year.
What track do you currently have on repeat on your iPod?
Anything by Redlight, his sound is too much for me right now, very refreshing.
Redlight’s is definitely tearing up the scene at the minute, If you could spend a day in the studio with anyone who would it be? Him? or someone else?
I’d love to, but anyone who appreciates the music and puts as much love and hard work into it as I do is the person(s) I’d like to do a recording session(s) with.
What does the future hold for Baitface?
I couldn’t possibly tell you. I know I’m gonna be doing music forever, in some form or another. I couldn’t live without it. Other than that, anything can happen can’t it? Maybe I’ll do an album? I will be starting my own label at some point though, so look out for that!
