Let’s not beat round the bush here, I’m having difficulty trying to remember the last time I heard some mind tickling music hailing from Wales.  Apart from Stereophonic, whose lyrics made more sense to me than my mother’s words during those teenage years and Goldie Looking Chain who provided Hip Hop with a breath of comical fresh air (just as gangster rap simply got too..well, gangster), I’m really not sure what musical genius has graced our tender ears in the last few years.

Yet one shall not speculate for too long, as brainchild Doc Daneeka a.k.a Martin Watkins has once again put Wales back on Mr. Cools map available from coolkids.com- and yes yes he is cooking up your speakers with neat and explicit UK Funky riddims hotter than oven fresh Welsh cakes! Call it Tropical, Soca, Basement House, Future Garage or whatever else MySpace genre category allows, but the 130 bpm 4 to the floor, sharp snare sound has even got Ms. Doubtfire shaking her jello like she’s got an afro.

Named under FACT ‘s top 10 producers to watch in 2010 and featured under Bubblin producers in XLR8R, Doc Daneekas’ produces highly percussive house music with rich stifling drums and syncopated rhythms. Drums in the Deep was a banger on Fabric’s Elevator Music compilation and his EP Deadly Rhythm was the first released on Ramp recordings imprint PTN alongside labels peers Hackman, Egyptrixx, Tokimonsta, and more. This was followed by a brand new 4 track EP Television released less than a week ago. The 4 track wonder exhibits Doc Daneekas distinctive style, smashing up the ambiance of a Cafe Del Mar track with the sway of heavy bashment and 4/4 shuffles. Expect anything from sirens, scattered hi-hats and deep baselines to Super Mario samples- Pow!

Doc Daneeka has also done a number of remixes for Delphic, Gatto Viola, The Prodigy, Spoek Mathambo and Digital Mystikz, appropriately cut and editing soulful/grime vocals with piano melodies over tribal beats. To showcase his passion towards innovative Funky/ 2-Step / House, Doc Daneeka has signed a number of insightful acts under his own label: Ten Thousand Yen Records in which he and his camp bring their stand out sound to another level. Keep your eyes peeled on fellow Welsh producers C.R.S.T. Consisting of Chesus, Rodski (featured on Television EP), Stroud and Tony Blitz. Aside from residenting at Bigger than Barry, these guys produce party bangers such as Baduka and personal favorite BumpJulio Bashmore is another Garage/ House junkie holding it down for the Ten Thousand Yen famalia.

Newly released Footsteppin’ and Chazm have received plenty of hype from blogs and DJs, often appearing in sets from the likes of Lil Silva and Bok Bok. London based duo Venom & Danger are also ones to watch as they cross over genres from Ghetto-Tech to Bassline. Check out Deeper and Doc Daneekas remix, both receiving tons of love and spin all round town. His Rhythm & Bass Vol. 1 mix offers another full stretch of gritty yet rhythmic tunes- git git git stompin’!
